Hårdrocksbandet Plåtslöjd gjorde succé på Solbackens äldreboende

It was supposed to be a calm, traditional afternoon of acoustic folk music and accordion playing in the garden of Solbacken retirement home. However, due to a highly unusual administrative mix-up by the municipality's culture department, the local death metal band Plåtslöjd from Falun was booked instead. The band, known for their heavy double-bass drums, distorted guitars, and guttural growling, was met by twenty-five neatly dressed seniors in sun hats, patiently waiting with their coffee cups.

The lead singer of Plåtslöjd, Marcus "Hjälmkrossaren" Lindqvist, admits that the band was gripped by instant panic when they saw their audience. "We immediately offered to pack up our gear and leave, but a lady in her nineties shook her walking cane at us and said we better show them what we imports were made of," Marcus laughs. The band decided to compromise on the spot and adapt their metal repertoire to a completely new demographic.

They kept their heavy, driving rhythm section and distorted guitars, but replaced their original dark lyrics with classic Swedish summer hymns and folk songs, like "Idas sommarvisa" and "Fritiof och Carmencita," performed with a heavy-metal growl. It turned out to be an absolute stroke of genius. It didn't take more than two songs before the first walker rolled toward the front stage, and seniors started clapping along with immense energy.

Within half an hour, the entire courtyard was transformed into a warm, slow-motion mosh pit of pure joy, where care staff and residents danced hand in hand. 92-year-old Elsa commented on the concert with gleaming eyes after the show: "Those boys really had some serious power! It is the first time in decades that I actually felt the music vibrate through my entire body." Plåtslöjd and Solbacken have now established a permanent residency, and the concept of "Senior Metal" is predicted to spread nationwide.
