It was in the beginning of July that retired carpenter Göte Johansson, 72, from Skövde decided to book his lifelong dream vacation. He dreamed of wild animals, vast open plains, and spectacular sunsets over the savannah. However, with trembling fingers and an overly generous search filter on his tablet, Göte accidentally clicked home a trip to a completely different kind of "safari". Instead of Nairobi, Kenya, his ticket was booked for Alstermo in the deepest forests of Småland, where a small alpaca farm had recently registered under the name "Safarigården".
When the train rolled into the sleepy station, Göte quickly realized his geographical mistake. Instead of the roars of wild lions, he was met by the soft, curious humming of three fluffy alpacas and the farm’s owners, Lisbeth and Dan. But instead of turning back in disappointment, Göte decided to make the absolute best of the situation. "I looked at Bruno the alpaca, who stared back at me with those giant, gentle eyes, and I thought to myself: this is still a whole lot more exciting than sitting alone on my balcony," Göte laughs.
The news of the misplaced pensioner spread like wildfire through the small community. Alstermo’s residents, famous for their warm hospitality, immediately decided to give Göte the ultimate, unforgettable safari experience of his life. Local businesses joined forces and arranged the "Alstermo Big Five Safari" over the weekend. The local bakery baked lion-shaped cinnamon buns, the village mechanic painted zebra stripes on an old tractor, and the school children dressed up as enthusiastic safari guides.
For a whole week, Göte was guided around in an open wooden carriage through the Småland pine forests. The grand finale was the large alpaca parade, where Göte was crowned "Småland's Honorary Safari Guide" and got to lead the herd through the main street. The humorous event has since gone viral on social media, and bookings for Alstermo's alpaca safari have skyrocketed. "It actually turned out much better than Africa," says Göte happily. "Here I don't have to take malaria pills, and the mosquito population is pretty much the same anyway!"
