Genom att kombinera avancerad robotteknik med pressade tallbarr har ett forskarlag skapat en cirkulär planteringsmetod. När drönarna slutfört sin skogssådd förvandlas de till näringsrik mylla för de nya träden.
The forestry sector is facing a revolutionary and incredibly green future, thanks to pioneering research conducted at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. A research team led by robotics professor Jonas Ekdahl has unveiled the world's first completely biodegradable drone. The machine, nicknamed "BarrSvävaren" (The Pine Float), is built entirely from dried pine needles, wood cellulose, and local organic wax, eliminating the need for plastics and metals in the drone's chassis.
The technology works by programming the drones to fly in autonomous swarms over hard-to-reach, wildfire-damaged, or clear-cut forest areas. Once in the air, they release highly nutritious seed capsules into the soil with millimeter precision. But the truly unique aspect of this project is what happens after the planting mission is complete. Instead of consuming energy flying back to a base for charging, the drones are designed to land softly on the forest floor where they begin a natural decomposition process.
Thanks to the natural binding agents in the pine needles and cellulose, it takes only a few weeks of exposure to summer rain and humidity for the entire drone to dissolve and melt into the soil. What was recently a high-tech flying robot becomes a perfect, nutrient-rich blanket that protects the newly planted seeds during their crucial germination phase. Only a tiny, non-toxic, and copper-free microchip remains, which can easily be reclaimed with magnets or left to degrade safely.
"This is biological engineering at its absolute finest—proof that high technology can live in complete, harmless symbiosis with nature," says Jonas Ekdahl proudly. The project has already generated massive international attention and is projected to triple the speed of global reforestation efforts, while creating a completely closed circular loop where the forest literally helps plant itself for future generations.
